Intermodal Equipment Providers (IEP)
The Intermodal Equipment Final Rule, which is effective June 17, 2009. Compliance is required by December 17, 2009.
This new regulation makes intermodal equipment providers (IEPs) subject to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs) for the first time, and establish shared safety responsibility among intermodal equipment providers, motor carriers, and drivers.
This new rule will enhance the safety of the country’s intermodal transportation system by improving maintenance which should result in fewer breakdowns and crashes involving intermodal chassis and fewer chassis being placed out of service.

Commercial Drivers Information Page

There are certain tests for drivers who operate CMVs. The double and triple trailers will need to have a knowledge test. The passenger will need to have a knowledge and skill test. The tank vehicle will only need a knowledge test . The drivers who handle hazardous material will need to take a knowledge test only. Also if a driver fails the air brake component of the general knowledge test or perform the skill test in a vehicle not equipped with air brakes, the driver will be issued an air brake restriction, restricting the driver from operating a CMV equipped with air brakes.
